Audacity, the venerable and much loved open source audio editor, has a 2.0 release today in versions for OS X, Windows and GNU/Linux.

Audacity is great for recording live audio, converting analog sources into digital recordings or CDs, and changing the speed or pitch of a recording. For many podcasters, Audacity is the go-to tool for recording and editing. You can edit Ogg Vorbis, MP3, WAV or AIFF sound files.

Here are new features of Audacity 2.0:

• Many effects are significantly improved, especially Equalization.
• Improved label tracks with Sync-Lock Tracks feature in the Tracks Menu.
• A new Device Toolbar to manage inputs and outputs, a Timer Record feature and a new Mixer Board view with per-track VU meters.
• Automatic Crash Recovery in the event of abnormal program termination.
• Fast "On-Demand" import of WAV/AIFF files if read directly from source. FLAC now fully supported.

KeepTube is yet another website that is quite a breeze to use. Much like the websites that were provided previously, using KeepTube is as simple as pasting the YouTube URL into the bar and clicking the download button. Following that, you will then be presented with the files which you can download in a variety of format such as 3GP, FLV, MP4, WebM and MP3 along with the link to the original YouTube video. You can also toggle the Non-Java option for those who doesn't have Java installed.

4. SaveVid

SaveVid is a great site that contains plenty of features. Aside from the standard functionality of being able to download YouTube videos quite easily, you may also share the link as Direct, HTML and BB-Code. Upon pasting the link, you will be given several links in many different formats, including HD versions of the video. Apart from that, you can also access videos that have been recently downloaded by other users. Weebly was one of the first website building tools that I played around with when I got started on my technology integration journey. It's a very intuitive and feature rich platform for creating a free website. For those reasons, it's always on my list of recommendations to teachers who want to build a classroom website.

Webs is another service that I have first-hand experience with in a school setting because a couple of my colleagues have used it for their classes. Webs has all of the characteristics that you would expect to find in a free website platform.

Yola is the tool that I used a few years ago to build websites for my department at school. Yola offers a great selection of templates and customizations. After setting up the basics of the site, my department handed it off to a student assistant who did a great job of updating it throughout the year.

If you already have a Google Account, Google Sites is already available to you. Just select it from the menu of services that you're not using. Google offers a wide variety of templates that you can use and customize on your site.


School Rack offers a free service for teachers to build and host their own classroom websites. Unlike other free website solutions that are targeted toward a general audience, School Rack has features designed specifically for teachers.

Web Node is a simple way to build a website. The easy to use, drag and drop, interface makes it easy to change the look and feel of your website.


Smore is a service for quickly creating great-looking webpages. Smore markets itself as a service for creating online flyers, but it's a little bit more than that. To me "flyer" implies that you're creating a single-use PDF and posting it online.

Check This is a service for quickly building and publishing webpages. Check This falls somewhere between having nothing on the web and a blog.
