Augmented World and Digital Games

Creativity | 2010. 11. 23. 02:10 | Posted by 스마트 안전보건

The Department of Virtual Worlds / Digital Games is concerned with technologies,

systems and occurrences of virtual and augmented realities (VR/AR/MR) as well as the

individual manifestations of digital games (serious games, pervasive games, online games,

mobile games, etc.). Their production, content and usage/adoption in particular with regard

to their application-relevant potential are investigated and new applications are developed

in an interdisciplinary (technology and social science based) approach.

Thematic Topics

Mobile Mixed Reality: The increasing availability of powerful mobile devices offers new opportunities for extending the users’ real environment by virtual content or even replacing it entirely. We research the necessary technologies as well as the effects of their usage.
Augmented Reality (AR) technologies: we research technologies simplifying and extending the usage of AR. This includes computer vision based interaction techniques and markup languages for AR
Game-based learning: We focus on the technological challenges and the social analysis of the opportunities and impact of serious games e.g. for formal and informal knowledge transfer or for training purposes.

Virtual worlds / Virtual Reality (VR): How can we develop virtual worlds and VR (as its corresponding interaction metaphor) for new user groups and novel application areas? How can we overcome existing media breaks when using VR?

Augmented Reality vs. Diminished Reality

Creativity | 2010. 11. 23. 02:04 | Posted by 스마트 안전보건

Augmented reality adds a layer of information with 3D rendered imagery into

the real world, on the other hand, there is another definition opposite to

augmented reality, called Diminished reality. Here you can get some ideas

about Augmented Reality and Diminished Reality.

The Pleasure and Danger of Augmented Reality

Eye
Smart phones. One can’t imagine life without them.  Ah, the endless convenience: looking up a restaurant on Yelp, finding out a movie’s rating on Rotten Tomatoes, seeing that cute guy’s profile on Facebook.
Augmented reality adds a layer of information on top of everything in front of your eyes. How? By making you wear glasses that have tiny video cameras in them. These cameras “see” the world on your behalf and livestream it to the inside of your glasses. You feel like you’re watching the world through transparent glasses, but in fact you’re seeing a movie of the scene in front of your eyes.
One can immediately see the value of augmented content. Just imagine being a tourist in Paris and having a quick history of the Eiffel Tower displayed next to it. You’d never need holiday guidebooks like Lonely Planet again!
Augmented reality adds content to a live streaming video, but it could just as easily remove content as well.

Augmented Reality Games

Creativity | 2010. 11. 21. 08:01 | Posted by 스마트 안전보건

These AR games are for smart phone users. I found this site

while I browsing Internet for my research paper this year.

Best Selling Augmented Reality Games of 2009

2009 was the year AR games broke from the lab into the hands of consumers – and this post celebrates that achievement.

By Platform

Nintendo

Augmented Reality games have been developed for a multitude of platforms such as PC/Mac, Nokia phones, Windows Mobile phones, Android phones, PDAs with cameras, Nintendo DSi, and the Gizmondo.

By Genre

Another popular approach to group games is by genre. When it comes to AR games genres, there’s a bit more variety than platforms: this year we have seen mostly shooters, but also horror games, a treasure hunt, and even one driving game.

By Commercial Success

I would have loved to provide you with a sorted list of games by revenue. Unfortunately, this information is not yet public. My guesstimate is that the most commercially succesful AR game of 2009 was in fact released for the PSP – not the iPhone.

By Game Mechanic

The term “Game mechanics” is defined by game design scholars as “a construct of rules intended to produce an enjoyable game“.

360 Shooters

The top game mechanic of AR games on the iphone uses the compass and accelerometer (3GS only) to compute your orientation and overlay graphics on the iPhone screen as if the action is happening all around you in 360 degrees.

2) Arcade Reality

3) Mosquitoes

4) – ARGH – AR Ghost Hunter

5) Fire Fighter 360

7) Pandemica

Augmented Reality in historic sites

Creativity | 2010. 11. 20. 20:01 | Posted by 스마트 안전보건

With only a GPS system and three other small devices, the Ancient

Past can now pop up from the ruins in front of the tourist’s eyes.

This system has already been trialed in Pompei, Italy, and Greece.

Chantal and Thierry love to visit historical sites. This year, they are having a trip around Greece, and have just made a stop at the site of Ancient Olympia. They want to see one of the most important sanctuaries of Antiquity - dedicated to Zeus - as well as the birthplace of the Olympic Games.

So far on their trip they have been reading guidebooks or listening to guides, making use of their imagination to visualize the buildings. But today, they are viewing the site as if they were in the past themselves. They have agreed to test a new tool called ‘Archeoguide’. Supported by the EU, researchers have developed a new information system along with other ICT experts from across Europe. Archeoguide provides users with the chance to see, in real time, a virtual reconstruction of buildings whilst listening to explanations.

Chantal and Thierry first tested Archeoguide on the Philippion. What remains today is just a couple of columns, and the whole structure is currently surrounded by scaffolding. But thanks to Archeoguide, Chantal and Thierry can see a reconstruction of the temple in real time and from all angles – a central body with white columns around the perimeter. What an amazing experience! Additionally, they also receive customized information about the buildings – which they specify prior to use to satisfy their own interests.

Archeoguide is based on cutting-edge technology using advanced IT including augmented reality, 3D-visualization, mobile computing, and multi-modal interaction techniques. The equipment consists of a Head-Mounted Display (HMD), an earphone and a mobile computing unit. But other versions include a PDA or a lightweight portable computer with a simple input device.

The couple tests all of them and chose to use the electronic glasses, which are light and easy to carry.

They are testing it on the temple of Hera, and then again at the temple of Zeus just opposite. While they are moving across the site, the images are also changing, according to the new perspective. And once they pass from one spot to another, a new reconstruction appears on screen. Such features are possible due to the tracking system. All around the site there are position sensors, which transmit this data to the users guide.

Chantal and Thierry are fascinated and found Archeoguide very easy to use. Today they have not only made a step into the past, but also the future. People like Chantal and Thierry can start to imagine traveling without reading through guidebooks or carrying maps.

Google's interactive book about the web

Creativity | 2010. 11. 20. 15:24 | Posted by 스마트 안전보건

Google launched an interactive book to teach everyone about the web. This interactive

book shows the fundamentals of browsers and the web, TCP/IP, HTML, etc. This one

might be interesting to people who are not familiar with Internet or computers.

Google Launches Interactive Book to Teach the Web

In an attempt to teach the average person about the fundamentals of browsers and the web, Google has released an interactive online book that explains concepts like, TCP/IP, HTML, browser extensions and malware.
The short book, 20 Things I Learned About Browsers and the Web, is a step-by-step explanation of the web and how it works. It was created by the Google Chrome (Google Chrome) team using HTML5, but it also features a lot of clever illustrations by award-winning German illustrator and children’s author Christoph Niemann.
The focus of the book is on 19 different topics (plus a recap, making for 20 things). It starts with “What Is the Internet (Internet)?” and then dives into cloud computing, web apps, web programming languages, browsers, privacy, security and open source.

Twitter's new tab "People"

Creativity | 2010. 11. 19. 22:44 | Posted by 스마트 안전보건

Twitter added new tab called "People", so that twitterers can easily find

more friends with New “People” Tab

Twitter Helps You Find More Friends With New “People” Tab

Twitter is testing a new People tab, positioned next to the Home, Profile and Messages tabs on the home page.

The new feature suggests friends for you, lets you browse Twitter users through interests, or find new Twitter buddies through other services such as Gmail, Yahoo, LinkedIn, Hotmail and Messenger.

It also shows the accounts you’ve recently followed and viewed, with the ability to quickly browse accounts that are similar to those you’ve followed.

Interestingly enough, it seems that Twitter is currently testing several slightly different versions of the feature. For example, on my account the new tab is called “Find People” instead of just “People”. See the difference in the screenshots below.

Best free online wiki sites

Creativity | 2010. 11. 19. 07:46 | Posted by 스마트 안전보건

These wiki sites are best recommended wikis in terms of compatibility, functionality,

and easiness. Wiki is the most collaborative site especially for education settings.

Best Free Online Wiki
my_documents_thumb1
For several weeks I have explored and shared both the Enjoyable and Disappointing of free, online wikis from the most popular to a couple of up-and-comers.
These highlights have consisted of the positives as well as negatives, the latter of which will hopefully be addressed by each respective wiki.

Wikia’s To Do

Reducing the sense of information overload and page clutter, will go a long way toward improving the overall Wikia User eXperience (UX). With so many choices, so much content, numerous ads, and an incoherent visual flow, one is forced to spend an inordinate amount of time scanning pages to find desired actions and navigation choices.

Google Docs Mobile Editing

Creativity | 2010. 11. 19. 03:02 | Posted by 스마트 안전보건

Google Docs now on you mobile. No matter where you are, with

your smart phone you can share, edit documents in Google Docs.

Google Docs Editing Goes Mobile

Google (Google) announced Wednesday morning that it has begun rolling out mobile editing for Google Docs (Google Docs). The update isn’t yet available for everyone, but it should be available to all over the next few days.

To date, only Google Docs spreadsheets have supported mobile editing. When the the update hits, all Google Docs documents will be editable on devices running Android (Android) 2.2 (and higher) and iOS 3.0+.

We’ve not been able to test it out yet, but Google has released a little video — as seen above — showcasing the new mobile editing capabilities of Google Docs.
