Apple will more focus on Design and User experience for decades to come

Creativity | 2011. 4. 3. 01:50 | Posted by 스마트 안전보건

On April 1, 1976, Steve Jobs, Steve Wozniak and Ronald Wayne established a small company to sell personal computer kits hand-built by Wozniak. That company, as you probably know, was Apple Computer.

jobswithphone-360.jpg

Thirty-five years later, Apple is now the most valuable technology company in the world. Its market capitalization exceeds $317 billion, trumping longtime rival Microsoft by more than $100 billion. And Apple’s iconic products sit on the desks and in the pockets of millions of people across the world.

Most people know bits and pieces of the Apple story, but the company has a complicated history. Some of us may not know, for example, that Apple had a third co-founder, Ronald Wayne, who got cold feet and sold his 10% stake in Apple less than two weeks later. Everybody knows Steve Jobs, but they may not know Mike Markkula, one of Apple’s first angel investors and the company’s second CEO.

In the 35 years of Apple’s existence, the company has gone through hell and back. The launch of the Macintosh in 1984 and the coinciding “1984″ Super Bowl commercial remain symbols one of Apple’s highest points, but only a year later, then-CEO John Sculley forced Steve Jobs out of the company. A decade later, in 1996, the company was on the brink of destruction when it acquired NeXT and brought Steve Jobs back. In 1997, Microsoft invested $150 million in Apple to keep it afloat (something it probably now regrets), and soon after came Apple’s golden years with the iPod, iMac, MacBook, iPhone and now the iPad.

We don’t necessarily want to dwell on Apple’s past; you can visit Wikipedia if you want a lesson in Apple Inc.’s history. Instead, let’s focus on what Apple might do in the next 35 years.

What’s In Store For The Next 35 Years?

For the last 35 years, Apple has almost always been the underdog. While it languished, Microsoft flourished. In fact, Apple surpassed Microsoft in market cap for the first time last May.

For the next few decades, however, the technology titan will be incumbent. Apple has a giant target on its back, and it’s not just Microsoft taking aim. Apple also faces challenges from Google, Amazon and a plethora of mobile device manufacturers. While Apple is handily beating its competition today, the status quo could change at any moment.

And while Apple fends off Android, PCs and competing tablets, it has its eye on creating a post-PC world. Rather than compete on hardware specs, it competes on design and user experience. Its a world of mobile devices that Apple intends to dominate for decades to come.

jobs2.jpg

Leading the charge is Steve Jobs, not only the company’s CEO but also its heart and soul. While he’s currently on medical leave, he did show up for the unveiling of the iPad 2, demonstrating things aren’t as dire as previously rumored.

Still, Apple will some day have to continue its quest to redefine technology without its iconic leader, and many question whether anybody can provide the design and product vision Jobs has imparted on the company he founded 35 years ago.

Even if you aren’t a fan of Apple products, it’s tough not to be impressed with what Apple has been able to accomplish since 1976. We wonder what products it will create and challenges it will face in the next 35 years. Right now though, the sun is definitely shining down on Cupertino.

Multifunctional touch screen Mac is Apple's Next?

Creativity | 2011. 4. 1. 04:28 | Posted by 스마트 안전보건

애플이 Mac OS를 기초로 하여 iOS와 iPad를 탄생시켰고 이제는 'Back to the Basic'이라는 콘셉트로 iOS와 iPad에서 배운 것을들 조만간 공식 공개 (Official launching)를 앞둔 Mac OS X 10.7 Lion에 적용하여 밀림의 왕자 사자와 같은 테크놀로지의 최강자로서 most advanced한 운영체제인 Mac OS X 10.7 Lion을 내놓게 됩니다. (June, 2011)

Apple_thumb160.jpg    MacLogo.jpg

mac_osx_107_lion_mission_control_macbook_air-550x339.jpg

1: Virtual Spaces iPad or Touch Mac

관련 글2: Apple is bringing to 'Spaces' to the iPad

The future of iOS is quietly shaping up behind the scenes at Apple, and we’ll probably get a good look at iOS 5 during WWDC 2011, but until then it’s mostly a guessing game. That is, until someone digs up some patents that show potential features in a currently unreleased product. Case in point, PatentlyApple has discovered a patent that describes Spaces (virtual desktops) in use on a “Multifunction Device” that looks a lot like an iPad.

iPad… or Touchscreen Mac?

While the patent drawing does look like an iPad, I think it’s just as possible that the multifunction device could be any touchscreen display, even for a currently unreleased touchscreen Mac. I say this because the behavior described in the patent is similar to how Spaces works in Mac OS X 10.7 Lion, where you sweep between Spaces by using the trackpad. It’s also reminiscent to the multitouch gestures you can enable for iPad by using developer tools with iOS 4.3. Those gesture similarities could even hint at further merging and sharing of features between future versions of iOS and Mac OS X.

Last year, multiple patents showed up for things like a MacBook tablet, MacBook Touch, and even an iMac Touch that runs both iOS and Mac OS X.  You can see more details of the patent at PatentlyApple. Remember, not all Apple patents see the light of day as a feature or a product, but they can give us great insight into what Apple is working on.

Mac OS X Lion Developer Preview 2 Available to Download: Build 11A419

mac-os-x-lion-developer-preview-2.jpg

Apple has released Mac OS X 10.7 Lion Developer Preview 2 (Build 11A419).

The new build comes as 11A419 and presumably contains mostly bug fixes and feature refinements to an otherwise stable developer preview.

Download Mac OS X Lion Preview 2

Registered developers can access the download either through Software Update in Mac OS X Lion, through the Mac App Store, or as a standalone download through the Mac developer center.  If you skipped the first Developer Preview release and you want to try Developer Preview 2, you can dual boot and install Lion alongside 10.6 without formatting your drive. Note that you’ll want the standalone download if you choose this option.

Public Release Coming Soon

Apple announced last fall that Mac OS X Lion is scheduled for a summer release date, with WWDC 2011 looking as the most likely time for a launch. Recent rumors suggest it could even be sooner.

Rotate MacBook Screen Orientation

Creativity | 2011. 3. 31. 07:03 | Posted by 스마트 안전보건

As people can rotate their screens in Windows with another application, people can rotate displays of Macintosh as well.

But for Macintosh, there is not any software needed to rotate the screen orientation.

All you need is to press two more buttons than usual.

Here is how you can manage to rotate your MacBook display orientation.

  • Launch System Preferences (quit it if it’s already open)
  • Hold down the Command+Option keys and click on “Display”
  • Look for ‘Rotation’ on the right side of the Display window and take your pick

After the display has been rotated, the resolutions adjust from width x height to height x width.

Here’s a screenshot taken with the display on a MacBook Air set at 90° rotation.

You can see one more content, when you hold down the Command+Option and click on "Display". That is 'Rotate (회전)'.

I tweaked my MacBook to look like iPad

Creativity | 2011. 3. 25. 03:37 | Posted by 스마트 안전보건

I tweaked my MacBook to look like iPad2.

It took me 15 minutes to make my MacBook iPad.

How do you think of this look?

By doing this, you can learn 3 things at the same time.

1. You can learn how to access to root account in your mac. (http://is.gd/F1RQks)

2. You can learn how to use fast switch function. (http://is.gd/A16TDa)

3. You can learn how to make your mac look like iPad.

스크린샷_2011-03-24_오후_12.32.32.png

This is how you make your MacBook look like iPad.

1) Add Spacers to the Mac OS X Dock – this is done with a Terminal command that must be executed once for each spacer you want to create. The command is:

defaults write com.apple.dock persistent-apps -array-add '{"tile-type"="spacer-tile";}'

Enter that into the command line then hit return. Then hit the up arrow and return again for each additional spacer you want to create, ie: do this 5 times for 5 spacers. Then you must kill the Dock for changes to take effect:

killall Dock

The spacers can then be moved around like any other Dock icon, just click and drag them. To get the proper iOS appearance, reduce the number of icons in your Dock to 4 or 6, but remember that the trash can will take up a space on the end as well.

2) Hide the Mac Menu Bar – There are multiple ways to do this, and you can either hide the menu bar or change the coloring or opacity of it. A simple method is to use the free app called “MenuEclipse” which lets you adjust the opacity of visible menu, it’s what I used in the screenshot above.

3) Increase Mac desktop icon size – Use a reverse finger pinch while on the desktop or hit Command+J and bring that slider up to 100+ pixels, depending on your desktops resolution size.

4) Make aliases of apps or folders you want to show on your Mac desktop – Select an app or folder and hit Command+L or hold down Command+Option while dragging the app to the Mac OS X desktop to create an instant alias.

5) Adjust the Aliased Desktop Icons to be on a Wide Grid – the icon grid spacing you’ll want is probably larger than the defaults that OS X allows, so go ahead and line them up manually.

6) Hide Macintosh HD and other drives from your desktop – iOS doesn’t display any drives, so you should set Mac OS X to behave the same way. This is easily done through by clicking on the Mac desktop, then opening Finder preferences and unselecting the checkboxes next to the items you want to hide from the desktop. If you use these, you could also just incorporate them into the iOS desktop styled grid.

7) Use an iOS icon set – I didn’t do this in the screenshot, but you could also take change your Mac icons to a set that resembles the squared appearance of iOS icons. The Flurry set from Iconfactory is a good start and still holds a Mac-ish appearance.

7 Steps to Make Mac OS X look like iPad iOS

Creativity | 2011. 3. 24. 21:42 | Posted by 스마트 안전보건

Have iPad envy? Do you prefer the ease of the iOS interface? Maybe you just like the way iOS looks and want your Mac to resemble that user interface. mac-ipad-desktop-sm.jpg

By combining a few tips, we can make the Mac OS X desktop look a lot like iPad’s iOS:

1) Add Spacers to the Mac OS X Dock – this is done with a Terminal command that must be executed once for each spacer you want to create. The command is:

defaults write com.apple.dock persistent-apps -array-add '{"tile-type"="spacer-tile";}'

And there you have it… your Mac desktop now looks a lot like an iPad.

Happy Birthday to Mac OSX 10 years old

Creativity | 2011. 3. 24. 19:48 | Posted by 스마트 안전보건

Believe it or not, Mac OS X is celebrating it’s birthday and turns 10 years old today. First released to the public on March 24, 2001, Mac OS X 10.0 Cheetah was a huge conceptual leap forward for the Mac platform. Unfortunately the first OS X iteration was painfully slow and largely unusable due to performance issues, and these troubles kept most Mac users on Mac OS 9 until 10.1 was released which sped things up dramatically. Things rapidly evolved from there and the rest is obviously history.

mac-os-x-10-years.jpg

This is what the first release of Mac OS X 10 Cheetah looked like, featuring elements that are still familiar today but with a candy striped Aqua interface:

mac-os-x-10-cheetah.jpg

Over the course of 10 years, what started as Mac OS X Cheetah has been refined into Mac OS X 10.7 Lion, which is scheduled for release this summer and looks a bit different:

mac-os-x-lion.jpg

Happy Birthday to Mac OS X!

Will Mac OS X be around in another 10 years? Probably not by name, but elements of it will surely live long into Apple’s future.

Mac OSX 10.6.7 update

Creativity | 2011. 3. 22. 21:10 | Posted by 스마트 안전보건

There is Mac OSX 10.6.7 update available now. I have already finished updating it.

It is almost 10.7, which is 'Lion'. I have already had Mac OSX 10.7 Lion preview and installed it first.

But there was something wrong to a few applications with 10.7 Lion, so I downloaded it again. And I now have Mac OSX 10.6.7 updated.

스크린샷_2011-03-22_오전_6.02.44.png

These are the updating features (Mac OS X v10.6.7).

The 10.6.7 Update is recommended for all users running Mac OS X Snow Leopard and includes general operating system fixes that enhance the stability, compatibility, and security of your Mac, including fixes that:

  • Improve the reliability of Back to My Mac
  • Resolve an issue when transferring files to certain SMB servers
  • Address various minor Mac App Store bugs

Go to update Mac OSX 10.6.7

Mac OS X 10.7 Lion Now Available in Torrent Sites

Creativity | 2011. 3. 18. 22:09 | Posted by 스마트 안전보건

Developer preview version of Mac OS X 10.7 Lion has already been released by Apple. As soon as Apple seeded an early version of Mac OS X 10.7 Lion to the developers, it was only a matter of time, and now the disk image is being shared by a good few thousand of users on various torrent sites. Now you can download Mac OS X 10.7 Lion from various Torrent sites but it is not safe to download it from the torrent sites.

d3ac25ef8c284b22b17be500f008b9c6.jpg

According to 9to5Mac, an installed version of Lion will “phone home” to Apple with no telling whether the Cupertino outfit will seek to block users not already registered as a developer. Also, it really makes a little sense to download it from a shady site however when Apple offers a Mac Dev account for just $99. So it is wise to register in Mac developer account.
