Using the color wheel

  1. Shape within the color wheel form three- and four-color harmonies.
  2. Analogous schemes are formed by three adjacent colors.
  3. Analogous schemes are often more smooth and rich feeling.
  4. Complementary pairs are opposites on the wheel.
  5. Complementary colors have lots of contrast and pop.
  6. Trying lots of combinations helps you choose the best result.

4 basic design principles

Education | 2011. 2. 25. 02:08 | Posted by 스마트 안전보건

These four principles are not all there is to know about graphic design, but
understanding these simple related concepts and applying them to slide design

can make for far more satisfying and effective designs.

They are CARP (Contrast, Alignment, Repetition, and Proximity).

Contrast
Contrast simply means difference. And for whatever reason—perhaps our
brains think they are still back in the savannah scanning for wild predators—we
are all wired to notice differences. We are not conscious of it, but we are
scanning and looking for similarities and differences all the time. Contrast is
what we notice, and it’s what gives a design its energy. So you should make
elements that are not the same clearly different, not just slightly different.

c0.PNG
Contrast is one of the most powerful design concepts of them all because
really any design element can be contrasted with another. You can achieve
contrast in many ways—for example, through the manipulation of space (near
and far, empty and filled), through color choices (dark and light, cool and
warm), by text selection (serif and sans serif, bold and narrow), by positioning
of elements (top and bottom, isolated and grouped), and so on.

c.PNG

Alignment
The whole point of the alignment principle is that nothing in your slide design
should look as if it were placed there randomly. Every element is connected
visually via an invisible line. Where repetition is more concerned with elements
across a deck of slides, alignment is about obtaining unity among elements
of a single slide.

a0.PNG

Even elements that are quite far apart on a slide should have
a visual connection, something that is easier to achieve with the use of grids.
When you place elements on a slide, try to align them with another element.

a.PNG

Repetition
The principle of repetition simply means the reusing of the same or similar
elements throughout your design. Repetition of certain design elements in a
slide or among a deck of slides will bring a clear sense of unity, consistency,
and cohesiveness.

r0.PNG

Where contrast is about showing differences, repetition is
about subtly using elements to make sure the design is viewed as being part
of a larger whole. If you use a stock template from your software application,
then repetition is already built into your slides. For example, a consistent
background and consistent use of type adds unity across a deck of slides.

r.PNG

Proximity
The principle of proximity is about moving things closer or farther apart to
achieve a more organized look. The principle says that related items should be
grouped together so that they will be viewed as a group, rather than as several
unrelated elements.

p0.PNG

Audiences will assume that items that are not near each
other in a design are not closely related. Audiences will naturally tend to group
similar items that are near to each other into a single unit.

Introduction to Instructional Design

Education | 2011. 1. 18. 04:14 | Posted by 스마트 안전보건

Instruction
   * The development and delivery of information and activities that are

created to facilitate attainment of intended, specific learning goals.

Related terms
   * Education: All experiences in which people learn.
   * Training: Instruction focused toward acquiring specific skills that will

      be used immediately.
   * Teaching: Education/Instruction delivered by a person
IMG_1379.JPG

Three phases of ID process
IMG_1380.JPG
   * Analysis: Learning contexts, learners, and learning task
   * Strategy development: organizational strategies, delivery strategies,

      and management strategies
   * Evaluation: conduct formative evaluation and revise instruction
Theoretically, ID process is a linear type, but in real practice,

every steps are connected with one another.
IMG_1381.JPG

Systematic Instructional Design's advantages
   * Provide learner advocacy
   * Promote effective, efficient, and appealing instruction
   * Assist coordination
   * Facilitates dissemination
   * Supports development of alternative delivery
   * Has congruence among objectives, activities, and assessment

Systematic ID's limitations
   * Requires identification of outcomes
   * Requires lead time
   * Is not applicable to non-instructional problems

General features of designing learning software

Education | 2011. 1. 1. 14:38 | Posted by 스마트 안전보건

This is general features that instructors should take into account

when they develop learning software such as text, video, or web.

Introduction

Use a short title page

Provide clear and concise directions

Allow user identification

Learner control

Use the mouse

Use keyboard also for more expert users

Use buttons for local controls

Use menus for global controls

Provide controls that are obvious and easy to use

Use cursor changes, rollovers, and confirmation with controls

Provide consistent position, appearance, and function in controls

Design controls in accordance with your users and your content

Make controls and directions for them visible only when available

Presentation of information

Be consistent

Use presentation modes appropriately (e.g., text, sound, video)

Text should be lean, clear, well formatted, and at an appropriate reading level

Use graphics and video for important information

Video should be short and controllable

Use speech to catch attention, give directions, and facilitate dual coding

Maintain good color contrasts, such as between foreground and background

Providing help

Procedural help should always be available

Provide context-sensitive help

Use rollovers as a form of constant help

Always provide a help button when help is available

Provide help in a manual for starting the program

Ending a program

Distinguish temporary versus permanent termination

Always allow temporary termination

Provide safety nets when the learner requests termination

Give credits and a final message at the end

5 design trends in 2011

Creativity | 2010. 11. 23. 06:23 | Posted by 스마트 안전보건

This post originally appeared on the American Express OPEN Forum, where Mashable

regularly contributes articles about leveraging social media and technology in small business.

In the past 12 months, we’ve seen a lot of changes in the world of web design. Growing popularity in the mobile device space — including smartphones and tablets like the iPad — have refined the way many users access and interact with content.

Likewise, the formal adoption of web standards like HTML5, web fonts and CSS3 by browser makers means that more and more users are now able to take advantage of the latest and greatest features on the web.

1. Lose the Flash

Regardless of where you stand in the war over Flash, the fact remains that more and more sites and web developers are moving away from Flash-only solutions for video, animation and navigation.

Flash still excels when it comes to building fully interactive designs and Rich Interactive Applications (RIAs), but for small business owners who aren’t showcasing or providing that sort of experience, trading Flash for HTML5, JavaScript and CSS3 might just make more sense.

2. Web Fonts

Typography is an important — I would argue crucial — component of any web design. Historically, customizing the typography you use on a website has been a complicated and headache-inducing process. As a result, most designers were reduced to either using the small selection of web-safe fonts or using workarounds like text images or Flash as text replacements.

3. Mobile Compatible/Optimized Sites

More and more websites — big and small — are taking the time to make their sites small screen friendly. Having a mobile compatible or mobile optimized website means that not only will your site load faster over cellular data connections but that content will be better formatted for the screens of smaller devices, making it easier to access and understand.

4. Inspired By Tumblr

The popular microblogging platform Tumblr (Tumblr) is a great way to quickly and easily post updates, share content and garner direct visitor feedback. Tumblr has become a really popular platform and more and more small businesses are using it for their own company blogs or sites.

5. Touches of the Future: HTML5 and CSS3

As I stated in the introduction, it can be difficult for small businesses that aren’t in a design-related field to adopt many of the cutting-edge web design trends for fear of shutting out parts of their potential audience.
