Mac OS X Lion DP3 released

Creativity | 2011. 4. 30. 10:52 | Posted by 스마트 안전보건

Mac OS X Lion may be just around the corner. Today (4/29, Fri), Mac OS X Lion Developer Preview 3 has been released.

스크린샷_2011-04-29_at_오후_6.36.14.png

There are not many features changed to DP3, but something about item (icon) sliding function has been changed.

DP2 (11A430e) -> DP3 (11A444d)

Animated tabs -> Normal tabs like the ones in SnowLeopard

 스크린샷_2011-04-29_오후_7.30.04.png

The third developer preview release of Mac OS X Lion reverts an experimental change in how tabbed panes are drawn and animated, dropping a iOS-like slider animation to present the active tab as simply a depressed button.
Apple is retaining Lion's toned down new version of its Aqua design language, which strips much of the bright blue highlighting and bubbly interface controls such as buttons and window navigation arrows, the omission of which tend to make Mac OS X look more cohesively related to iOS.

However, Lion's new sliding pane tabs, which originally appeared to make the control function like a physically raised button that slid into place on a click (as depicted below) have been revised in Lion DP3 to work, but not look, more like the existing controls in Snow Leopard.

Aqua.Speechpane.png

The overall look of the new tab controls when they appear in nestled panes is portrayed below, comparing the Speech pane in Snow Leopard with the revised appearance of Lion DP3. The graphics also depict the loss of colored highlighting throughout the interface, and flatter, round radio button controls as opposed to the "candy drop" bubbles introduced by Aqua.

How to get a Mac Serial Number quickly

Creativity | 2011. 4. 26. 00:40 | Posted by 스마트 안전보건

You can quickly retrieve any Macs serial number via the command line by using the following command string:

system_profiler |grep "r (system)"

스크린샷_2011-04-25_at_오전_9.30.02.png

The command results will look something like this:

$ system_profiler |grep "r (system)"
Serial Number (system): 739XXXX
XXXX

스크린샷_2011-04-25_at_오전_9.30.08(2).png

If you just grep for “Serial Number” you’ll be presented with serial numbers to other hardware included in the Mac, which is why the “r (system)” qualifier is included.

Once you have a serial number, you can do things like check AppleCare warranty status and repair history.

Capster_Mac Application to show caps lock on/off

Creativity | 2011. 4. 23. 20:42 | Posted by 스마트 안전보건

remotesnap000052.jpg

capster-188-234551.png

Original Post (English)

CAPS Warn is a menu-bar utility that displays a bright-red icon and sounds an alert whenever caps lock is enabled. But if you’re already using the excellent Growl notification system, a simpler—but just as effective—option is Capster (download link).

Launch Capster—it can run invisibly as a background-only application—and if you press the caps-lock key, intentionally or not, Capster pops up a Growl notification letting you know. Disable caps lock, and you get a Growl confirmation of that, too.

Because it uses Growl, you can customize Capster’s alerts using Growl’s System Preferences pane. For example, you can choose a different Growl display style and onscreen position for your Capster alerts than for other Growl notifications. You can also choose separate notification options (display style, priority, and alert sound) for when you enable caps lock and when you disable it—on my Mac, the caps-lock-on alert uses High priority (which means it pulses red) and an audible alert, while the caps-lock-off alert uses Normal priority and doesn’t make a sound.

Capster’s only other settings let you choose whether or not the utility displays a systemwide menu; and, if not, which keyboard shortcut you need to press to access these settings. If you choose to display the menu, you get several options for its menu-bar icon; whichever one you choose, the menu icon works much like CAPS Warn, changing its appearance whenever caps lock is enabled.

Because it relies on Growl for notifications, Capster doesn’t have some of the unique options of CAPS Warn, such as the capability to warn you whenever you’ve typed more than a set number of capital letters in a row—say, if you typed them using the Shift key instead of caps lock. (These days, CAPS Warn can also notify you when other modifier keys are pressed.) I also found what appears to be a minor bug in Capster: If caps lock is enabled, pressing Shift produces the Caps Lock On alert. But Capster works well, and if you’re already using Growl, Capster is a simple and easy way to get a convenient and popular feature.

Add a Recent Items Menu to the Dock

Creativity | 2011. 4. 16. 02:18 | Posted by 스마트 안전보건

You can add a Recent Items menu to the Mac OS X Dock by using a defaults write command. The default is set to “Recent Applications” but once the Dock item exists you can adjust it to feature other recent items too.

스크린샷_2011-04-15_오전_11.13.47.png

Launch the terminal and enter the following:

defaults write com.apple.dock persistent-others -array-add '{ "tile-data" = { "list-type" = 1; }; "tile-type" = "recents-tile"; }'

That needs to all be on a single line, so if you copy and paste it make sure the command is one string.

You will then need to kill the Dock.

killall Dock

스크린샷_2011-04-15_오전_11.13.33.png

Now right-click on the newly appeared Recent Applications Dock item and you can change it to be Recent Applications, Recent Documents, Recent Servers, Favorite Volumes, or Favorite Items.

How to use the reverse scrolling of Mac OS X Lion in Snow Leopart

Creativity | 2011. 4. 15. 00:13 | Posted by 스마트 안전보건

Reverse scrolling is one of those features that came along in Mac OS X 10.7 Lion that surprised a lot of people, on a computer it doesn’t feel quite as normal as it does on a touchscreen iPad or iPhone, but once you get used to it, it’s good.

If you dual boot between 10.7 and 10.6 and you’re used to the Lion inverse scrolling, or you just prefer the way the iPad and iPhone scroll through documents and webpages, this app is what you’re looking for.

9.07.59.png

You can get Scroll Reverser free from the developer.

Click here to download Scroll Reverser 1.2

9.10.50.png

This app made the rounds a little while ago and I didn’t see a lot of use for it, but the more I use Lion the more I come back to Snow Leopard and find the scrolling differences strange to get used to. With this app, no more problems.

If you’re confused here let me explain: Mac OS X 10.7 Lion defaults to the way iOS scrolls through documents, this is the opposite behavior to Mac OS X 10.6 and before. If you hate the idea, don’t worry. Scrolling isn’t permanently inverted and the behavior can be changed through the Trackpad/Mouse System Preferences.

Show/Hide Mac Finder Sidebar/Toolbar

Creativity | 2011. 4. 14. 03:40 | Posted by 스마트 안전보건

This is the typical look of Finder window in Mac OS X.

Screen_Shot_2011-04-13_at_오후_12.31.36.png

You can hide the sidebar from Mac Finder windows by hitting Command+Option+S, this command keeps the window toolbar buttons intact across making it different than than clicking on the grey pill-button.

If you’re not a fan of keyboard shortcuts, you can also select this option manually through the View menu and choosing “Hide Sidebar.” This change will affect all Mac OS X windows.

Screen_Shot_2011-04-13_at_오후_12.31.49.png

You can also show and hide toolbar of Mac Finder windows by hitting Command+Option+T.

In addition, pressing Command+1, 2, 3, or 4 makes the way to view content of disk or folder.

Apple will more focus on Design and User experience for decades to come

Creativity | 2011. 4. 3. 01:50 | Posted by 스마트 안전보건

On April 1, 1976, Steve Jobs, Steve Wozniak and Ronald Wayne established a small company to sell personal computer kits hand-built by Wozniak. That company, as you probably know, was Apple Computer.

jobswithphone-360.jpg

Thirty-five years later, Apple is now the most valuable technology company in the world. Its market capitalization exceeds $317 billion, trumping longtime rival Microsoft by more than $100 billion. And Apple’s iconic products sit on the desks and in the pockets of millions of people across the world.

Most people know bits and pieces of the Apple story, but the company has a complicated history. Some of us may not know, for example, that Apple had a third co-founder, Ronald Wayne, who got cold feet and sold his 10% stake in Apple less than two weeks later. Everybody knows Steve Jobs, but they may not know Mike Markkula, one of Apple’s first angel investors and the company’s second CEO.

In the 35 years of Apple’s existence, the company has gone through hell and back. The launch of the Macintosh in 1984 and the coinciding “1984″ Super Bowl commercial remain symbols one of Apple’s highest points, but only a year later, then-CEO John Sculley forced Steve Jobs out of the company. A decade later, in 1996, the company was on the brink of destruction when it acquired NeXT and brought Steve Jobs back. In 1997, Microsoft invested $150 million in Apple to keep it afloat (something it probably now regrets), and soon after came Apple’s golden years with the iPod, iMac, MacBook, iPhone and now the iPad.

We don’t necessarily want to dwell on Apple’s past; you can visit Wikipedia if you want a lesson in Apple Inc.’s history. Instead, let’s focus on what Apple might do in the next 35 years.

What’s In Store For The Next 35 Years?

For the last 35 years, Apple has almost always been the underdog. While it languished, Microsoft flourished. In fact, Apple surpassed Microsoft in market cap for the first time last May.

For the next few decades, however, the technology titan will be incumbent. Apple has a giant target on its back, and it’s not just Microsoft taking aim. Apple also faces challenges from Google, Amazon and a plethora of mobile device manufacturers. While Apple is handily beating its competition today, the status quo could change at any moment.

And while Apple fends off Android, PCs and competing tablets, it has its eye on creating a post-PC world. Rather than compete on hardware specs, it competes on design and user experience. Its a world of mobile devices that Apple intends to dominate for decades to come.

jobs2.jpg

Leading the charge is Steve Jobs, not only the company’s CEO but also its heart and soul. While he’s currently on medical leave, he did show up for the unveiling of the iPad 2, demonstrating things aren’t as dire as previously rumored.

Still, Apple will some day have to continue its quest to redefine technology without its iconic leader, and many question whether anybody can provide the design and product vision Jobs has imparted on the company he founded 35 years ago.

Even if you aren’t a fan of Apple products, it’s tough not to be impressed with what Apple has been able to accomplish since 1976. We wonder what products it will create and challenges it will face in the next 35 years. Right now though, the sun is definitely shining down on Cupertino.

Multifunctional touch screen Mac is Apple's Next?

Creativity | 2011. 4. 1. 04:28 | Posted by 스마트 안전보건

애플이 Mac OS를 기초로 하여 iOS와 iPad를 탄생시켰고 이제는 'Back to the Basic'이라는 콘셉트로 iOS와 iPad에서 배운 것을들 조만간 공식 공개 (Official launching)를 앞둔 Mac OS X 10.7 Lion에 적용하여 밀림의 왕자 사자와 같은 테크놀로지의 최강자로서 most advanced한 운영체제인 Mac OS X 10.7 Lion을 내놓게 됩니다. (June, 2011)

Apple_thumb160.jpg    MacLogo.jpg

mac_osx_107_lion_mission_control_macbook_air-550x339.jpg

1.23.22.png

1: Virtual Spaces iPad or Touch Mac

2: Apple is bringing to 'Spaces' to the iPad

The future of iOS is quietly shaping up behind the scenes at Apple, and we’ll probably get a good look at iOS 5 during WWDC 2011, but until then it’s mostly a guessing game. That is, until someone digs up some patents that show potential features in a currently unreleased product. Case in point, PatentlyApple has discovered a patent that describes Spaces (virtual desktops) in use on a “Multifunction Device” that looks a lot like an iPad.

iPad… or Touchscreen Mac?

While the patent drawing does look like an iPad, I think it’s just as possible that the multifunction device could be any touchscreen display, even for a currently unreleased touchscreen Mac. I say this because the behavior described in the patent is similar to how Spaces works in Mac OS X 10.7 Lion, where you sweep between Spaces by using the trackpad. It’s also reminiscent to the multitouch gestures you can enable for iPad by using developer tools with iOS 4.3. Those gesture similarities could even hint at further merging and sharing of features between future versions of iOS and Mac OS X.

Last year, multiple patents showed up for things like a MacBook tablet, MacBook Touch, and even an iMac Touch that runs both iOS and Mac OS X.  You can see more details of the patent at PatentlyApple. Remember, not all Apple patents see the light of day as a feature or a product, but they can give us great insight into what Apple is working on.
