How to change 'Terminal' window background

Creativity | 2011. 5. 2. 22:43 | Posted by 스마트 안전보건

ou can quickly change the appearance of any Terminal window by using the Inspector tool. With Terminal.app launched and at least one window open, hit Command+i to bring up the Inspector utility, then click on the “Settings” tab. Here you’ll see a list of preset appearance options as well as any custom settings you have created and saved.

Changes take effect immediately, so click around and you’ll see instantly how things look.

If you’d rather launch a new styled Terminal window, you can so do from the Dock.

Take a Timed Screen Shot in Mac OS X

Creativity | 2011. 5. 2. 11:55 | Posted by 스마트 안전보건

You can take time delayed screenshots in Mac OS X by using the Grab utility or the Terminal. Grab and Terminal are bundled with every Mac in your /Applications/Utilities/ directory, find them there or launch it with Spotlight (Command+Space). We’ll cover Grab first because it’s more user friendly and doesn’t involve the command line.

스크린샷_2011-05-01_오후_8.52.13.png

Timed Screen Shots with Grab

Once you’re in Grab: Pull down the “Capture” menu and select “Timed Screen” or hit Command+Shift+Z to bring up the timed capture alert dialog that you see in the screenshot above. When you’re ready, click on “Start Timer” and you’ll have 10 seconds to stage your screenshot before Grab snaps the entire screen.

timed-screenshot-macosx.jpg

You’ll notice Grab won’t be visible in the screenshot, which is nice otherwise the app would be kind of useless.

Time Delayed Screen Shots via Terminal

If you’re inclined to travel the more technical road, you can also take time delayed screen shots from the Terminal using the screencapture command:

screencapture -T 10 osxdaily.jpg

You can adjust the time to anything in seconds, that example is for a 10 second delay. The filename follows, which will be created in your users home directory unless you specify otherwise. You can see some more screencapture options here.

You’ll notice I say screen shot, but those coming to the Mac from Windows often refer to this process as “Print Screen” thanks to the little button on their old PC keyboards. Unless you time the pressing of that button, timed screenshots are a feature of Mac OS X only. Also you might notice in that screenshot that I’m hiding my Mac OS X menu bar, this is achieved through a 3rd party utility called MenuEclipse.

Mac OS X Lion DP3 released

Creativity | 2011. 4. 30. 10:52 | Posted by 스마트 안전보건

Mac OS X Lion may be just around the corner. Today (4/29, Fri), Mac OS X Lion Developer Preview 3 has been released.

스크린샷_2011-04-29_at_오후_6.36.14.png

There are not many features changed to DP3, but something about item (icon) sliding function has been changed.

DP2 (11A430e) -> DP3 (11A444d)

Animated tabs -> Normal tabs like the ones in SnowLeopard

 스크린샷_2011-04-29_오후_7.30.04.png

The third developer preview release of Mac OS X Lion reverts an experimental change in how tabbed panes are drawn and animated, dropping a iOS-like slider animation to present the active tab as simply a depressed button.
Apple is retaining Lion's toned down new version of its Aqua design language, which strips much of the bright blue highlighting and bubbly interface controls such as buttons and window navigation arrows, the omission of which tend to make Mac OS X look more cohesively related to iOS.

However, Lion's new sliding pane tabs, which originally appeared to make the control function like a physically raised button that slid into place on a click (as depicted below) have been revised in Lion DP3 to work, but not look, more like the existing controls in Snow Leopard.

The overall look of the new tab controls when they appear in nestled panes is portrayed below, comparing the Speech pane in Snow Leopard with the revised appearance of Lion DP3. The graphics also depict the loss of colored highlighting throughout the interface, and flatter, round radio button controls as opposed to the "candy drop" bubbles introduced by Aqua.

How to show currently active apps in Mac OS X Dock

Creativity | 2011. 4. 29. 00:11 | Posted by 스마트 안전보건

Here’s a great trick if you prefer a minimalist Mac OS X desktop and Dock: set the Dock to only display currently active apps. Launch the Terminal and enter the following command:

스크린샷_2011-04-28_at_오전_9.06.39.png

defaults write com.apple.dock static-only -bool TRUE

Now you have to kill the Dock for changes to take effect:

killall Dock

If you use the Dock as an app launcher, this probably won’t be that useful for you. I almost always use Spotlight to launch apps and have my Dock automatically hide, so I’m going to try this out for a while and see how well it works in my day to day workflow.

If you want to revert back to the default Dock behavior, use this command:

defaults write com.apple.dock static-only -bool FALSE

Don’t forget to kill the Dock again for the changes to take effect.

killall Dock

Note: if you try out this tip and don’t like it, you won’t lose your previous Dock icons or arrangement, just use the FALSE command and everything will be back to normal.

Mac OS X Lion installation methods

Creativity | 2011. 4. 27. 00:48 | Posted by 스마트 안전보건

Mostly DVD-ROM installation, possibly USB installation or Mac App Store installation.

The DVD may not be dead yet after all. It looks like Mac OS X 10.7 Lion may be offered on traditional DVD installation disks in addition to the more modern and fancy App Store download distribution and USB installer keys.

The possible leak comes from a German Amazon page (via CultOfMac) for the upcoming release of Mac OS X Lion, where mediatype is clearly specified as DVD-ROM (screenshot below):

mac-os-x-lion-dvd-installer-germany.gif

It’s entirely possible that this placeholder is inaccurate or even a mistake, but Amazon does have a history of accidentally leaking release dates and software upgrades on their various worldwide online stores.

I should also point out that the idea of a USB key installation method is speculation based on the new MacBook Air Mac OS X install drive, and the distribution from the App Store is also speculated based upon the digital delivery of the Mac OS X Lion Developer Previews through the Mac App Store. It’s entirely possible that neither of these installation methods will appear and that we will only see a DVD installer, but with the MacBook Air and Mac Mini Server’s lacking DVD drives, those devices must be served with some form of installation method for Lion.

We’re almost certain to find out what exact installation methods we’ll get for Lion at WWDC 2011, which is just a few months away.

Instant word completion in Mac OS X with esc or F5

Creativity | 2011. 4. 22. 00:09 | Posted by 스마트 안전보건

In many Mac OS X apps, you can activate word completion by starting to type a word and then hitting either the F5 key or the Escape key. This will bring up a large menu of every word starting with the letter prefix you entered:

word-completion-mac-f5.jpg

Word completion seems to only work in Apple crafted cocoa apps, so you’ll be able to use the feature in Safari, Pages, Keynote, TextEdit, iCal, etc, but in a browser like Chrome you’re out of luck.

This is really useful when you’re trying to remember how to spell a word, or if you’re trying to think of words that start with a particular prefix or letter (scrabble anyone?). If you’re wondering where the word list is coming from, it’s tied to your Mac OS X dictionary, which is also readily available via a keyboard shortcut.

Unfortunately, this function is for only English, not for other languages.

How to quickly remove Finder toolbar icons

Creativity | 2011. 4. 19. 21:59 | Posted by 스마트 안전보건

Holding cmd (Command) + Clicking on the icon and dragging out of the toolbar in Finder.

remove-icon-from-toolbar.jpg

You can quickly remove Mac OS X Finder window toolbar icons by holding down the Command key and then clicking on the icon you want to remove, continue to hold the click and drag the icon out of the toolbar, where you can release the click. The toolbar icon will disappear in a puff of smoke, just like dragging icons out of the Dock or menubar.

If you’re wondering why my Finder windows don’t have a sidebar, you can remove it with a keyboard shortcut.

Mac OS X 10.7 Lion DP2 update (11A430e) released (1GB)

Creativity | 2011. 4. 17. 22:12 | Posted by 스마트 안전보건

An update to Mac OS X Lion Developer Preview 2 has been pushed out via Software Update. The download comes in at around 1GB and changes aren’t specific other than being “recommended for all users running Mac OS X Lion Developer Preview 2.”

lion-developer-preview-2-update.jpg

What about Developer Preview 3? Alongside the DP2 update, an accompanying XCode 4.1 update includes a reference to “support Mac OS X Lion preview 3,” suggesting that Lion Developer Preview 3 may be released in the near future. XCode 4.1 preview 3 is a required update if you plan on building any software in Lion DP2.

remotesnap000032.jpg

I updated it from DP2 11A319 to DP2 11A430e.

lion-preview-3-coming.gif

Mac OS X Lion Developer Preview 2 was released to developers on March 30, I found the update to be less stable and more resource hungry than Developer Preview 1, so I haven’t used it much. I’m hoping this update resolves some of the memory leaks that appeared in Developer Preview 2, although not all machines seem to be affected.

As always, backup your Mac before installing system updates. This is especially important when using a beta OS, which is also why I’ll continue recommending the dual boot method if you plan on trying out the Lion preview releases.

Lion Developer Preview 2 Update 1 Package – Direct Downloads

Here are direct download links from Apple for Dev Preview 2 Update 1 Package installers. These do NOT contain the full installation of Lion, only the update package released today. If you’re not a developer with Dev Preview 2 already installed, these won’t be of any use:
Lion Client DP2 Update 1

Lion Server DP2 Update 1

Lion Server Essentials DP2 Update 1

Lion Server Admin Tools DP2 Update 1

Add a Recent Items Menu to the Dock

Creativity | 2011. 4. 16. 02:18 | Posted by 스마트 안전보건

You can add a Recent Items menu to the Mac OS X Dock by using a defaults write command. The default is set to “Recent Applications” but once the Dock item exists you can adjust it to feature other recent items too.

스크린샷_2011-04-15_오전_11.13.47.png

Launch the terminal and enter the following:

defaults write com.apple.dock persistent-others -array-add '{ "tile-data" = { "list-type" = 1; }; "tile-type" = "recents-tile"; }'

That needs to all be on a single line, so if you copy and paste it make sure the command is one string.

You will then need to kill the Dock.

killall Dock

스크린샷_2011-04-15_오전_11.13.33.png

Now right-click on the newly appeared Recent Applications Dock item and you can change it to be Recent Applications, Recent Documents, Recent Servers, Favorite Volumes, or Favorite Items.
